The James Island Yacht Club was formed in 1898 under the Crescent and Star burgee flown on the yacht Swan , the stars of which symbolized the eight Sea Islands, each of which was represented by a vessel raced at local regattas in the late 1800's. The spirit of this competition and these boats lives on today in the Sea Island One Design, the featured class at many local regattas. The club was incorporated under its current blue and white pennant in 1905. The JIYC moved to its current location in 1956. Located on the south side of Charleston harbor, the club has continued to expand its sailing traditions with its annual regatta, summer sailing training, a Summer Sunfish Sailing Series, and hosting numerous one design class regional and national championships. In 1998 the Centennial Cup, JIYC’s only PHRF regatta became part of Charleston’s Leukemia Cup Regatta. It has also played host to the regional Special Olympics Regatta expanding even further a century of low-country sailing tradition. The James Island Open has long been an important part of the SAYRA Junior Champions program. |
