AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL COMMODORES IN SAYRA

Dear Commodore,

Are your Regatta Chairpersons constantly scrambling to get race officials for your venues? Would you like to have an in-house Judge for training and officiating? If so, please consider submitting the name of a candidate to the SAYRA Judge Program.

The purpose of the SAYRA Judge Program is to develop personnel within the SAYRA area who can judge regattas at any SAYRA club and can progress to US Sailing Judge certification. The program is self-paced, on the job, training under the mentorship of a US Sailing certified judge.

The requirement of a candidate is to express and demonstrate a willingness to serve and have a commitment of time and travel. For time there is a commitment to study the rules,, and appeals. Also, the candidate will travel to various SAYRA clubs to sit on juries and conduct hearings. The Organizing Authority would arrange the housing, but there will be wear and tear on their car and gas expense.

The process for joining the SAYRA Judges Program is :

  1. The SAYRA Judge candidate will submit an application, signed by the Commodore or Vice-Commodore of the applicants club, to the SAYRA Judges Program Director.
  2. The Program Director will approve the application and assign a Judge-Mentor to the candidate.
  3. The applicant will then proceed through the training program under the guidance of his/her mentor. When the candidate thinks that they are ready, they will be given a written exam. If they pass the exam and meet other requirements, they will be recognized as a SAYRA judge and be able to serve as a judge in any event within the SAYRA area.
  4. A SAYRA Judge’s activity in the SAYRA Program can be applied to the US Sailing requirements for judge certification.

Attached is an application for the SAYRA Judges Program. For more information please contact Steve Szymanski, szymanskim@msn.com or call me on (803) 403-5777.

Respectfully submitted,

Steve Szymanski
