Here is a plan to bring back a PHRF Championship.
We could model it after the US Sailing’s Lloyd Phoenix Trophy. The tricky part is the qualification. Can we leave this up to each area? Or should we have teams within SAYRA submit a resume from each area. The resumes would go before a SAYRA appointed committee to select the four teams possibly six depending on the availability of boats. The selected teams will have to be able to show a certain level of competency at handling a boat such as the Farr 40. The winners or competitors can use this event as stepping stone towards getting accepted for the Lloyd Phoenix but what I understand is this event cannot be considered a qualifier.
The event:
I would suggest a two day event to keep the costs down. We could have three course races and one good long distance race. Since On Deck is based out of the Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina we should be able to utilize their facilities for race headquarters teams can either stay right at the resort or there are plenty of lesser expensive alternatives nearby. The boats would On Deck’s fleet of Farr 40s. There are currently four that are available but they are working a two more. The availability is June 1st through the end of August. The Lloyd Phoenix is being hosted by the Naval Academy on September 23rd to 25th 2011. It would nice to have this event early enough that teams competing in our championship could use our event in their bids. All courses are offshore with three course races and one distance race. The organizing authority can be CORA. Here is a potential schedule for the event.
Schedule Friday PM Boat Review & Practice Friday Evening Welcoming Party Saturday Course Race 1 Long Distance Race Saturday Evening Crew Mixer Sunday Course Race 2 Course Race 3 Awards
We decided at this board meeting to define the details during the PHRF Meeting scheduled at S.A.Y.R.A.’s annual meeting to be held in Hilton Head at the Oceanfront Resort January 29th.
Questions to ponder : What is a reasonable entry fee? ( $500) Who underwrites the event? (CORA? ) What costs will be there with the Farr 40s (they will need to have representatives on board) (Hopefully On Deck will sponsor) Who is the selection committee? What date?
Please don’t hesitate to discuss prior to the event the more sorting we can do prior to the annual meeting the better.
