SAYRA Goes South Eleven SAYRA sailors flew south to Miami for the annual Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club. A Christmas tradition with many from our region, the Orange Bowl Regatta normally presents sailors with challenging conditions and this year was no different. However, the challenge this year was not gear busting breeze, but shifting gears from the 10 -15 and lumpy seas the first two days to 2 – 5 knots the last two days. Avery Fanning proved to be the master in the Laser radial class, sailing consistently with one win and no finish worse than 11th to take second place overall in the 99 boat fleet. Nick Valente finished 22nd with Rolfe Glover nipping on his heels in 25th. Other SAYRA sailors in the radial class included Dana Rohde, Sally Key, Kelly Milliken and Parks Blair. Daniel Birmingham and Alan Simonini carried the mail in the Laser full rig class, while Joe David with crew Kaiti David represented the region in the 420 class. With several more years ahead of many of these young sailors, the future looks bright for the SAYRA burgee!

2011 SAYRA Junior Championship Notice of Race July 26, 2011 Please note the following changes to the 2011 SAYRA Junior Championship Series NOR. Section 3.2 is amended to read that with reference to the SAYRA Open CYC-NC, “Ocean and Sound Course will be scored for Sunfish Juniors; Sound course only will be scored for Sunfish Midgets” Section 3.2 is amended to read that with reference to the SAYRA Open CYC-NC, “(Ocean Course and Sound course will be scored for Laser Full, Radial and 4.7)” Optimist Fleet Scoring The question has arisen as to how to score different fleets in the Optimist Class. Typically Red, White and Blue fleets are started at the same time, while Green fleet is started separately. In the normal sequence of events, an overall score is posted, then the fleet has been sorted into the sub-fleets, i.e. Red, White and Blue. The USODA has taken the position that “overall scoring shall be used to determine red, blue and white awards.” (Section 8.3, USODA regatta manual). This means that Race Committees need not reassign finish places within the sub-fleets based on where sailors finished in the overall fleet. For example, a White fleeter who finishes 10th in a 25 boat race, but which is the first White fleeter would not receive 1 point for their finish in the white sub-fleet, but would rather receive 10 points. If the same White fleeter was to be DSQed, then they would receive 26 points. While it would seem that the two methodologies would result in the same sub-fleet finishes, at times they can yield different results. As a reminder, Green Fleet should not be scored as all participants are considered winners and should be recognized accordingly.
