The Savannah Yacht club was formed in June of 1869 as the Regatta Association of the State of Georgia.  Its name was changed to the Savannah Yacht Club in 1876.  The Club was incorporated in 1882 for the purpose of encouraging aquatic exercises and conducting regattas.  In 1905, the club moved from the city to Thunderbolt, Georgia, where it remained until 1950.  At that time, the membership purchased the Glendenning property at the end of Bradley Point. The SYC was one of the original members of SAYRA.

Since that time, the Savannah Yacht Club has grown to include a large club house, a dock house dedicated to boating, a tennis center, swimming pools, and three dock areas.  The club remains an important factor in sailboat racing in the Savannah area.  It proudly hosts one of the countries most successful Leukemia Cup Regattas each year. For over fifty years, it has hosted the Deep South Regatta, a part of the Lightning Southern Circuit.  The Firecracker, a one-design regatta, is a popular summer event for both adults and juniors.
