The first sailing club on Lake Murray was established in the 1930’s, but dissolved when the winds of war blew across the world. From a nucleus of this club the Columbia Sailing Club was founded on July 17, 1957. The club grew, using member’s homes as regatta headquarters. A tenuous lease with SCE&G was signed and eventually a fabricated building was erected. The club functioned in this manner until the spring of 1977.
As time passed an east wing was added to the original prefab, then a kitchen and extra rest rooms were built. The Ladies Auxiliary raised money for the covered patio and grill on the west end of the building along with many other projects to aid CSC. In April of 1977, CSC bought the land which paved the way for more expansion. The Easter Regatta evolved into the premier event of the club. Following that event in 2007 the old clubhouse was razed and construction began on a new facility and was completed in 2008.
The most prestigious award given in SAYRA is the Willard Davis Award, given for service to SAYRA and the sport of sailing. It takes its name from a long time member of CSC nationally known for his service to the sport of sailing.
